On the mornings of October 8 and May 7, 2025, sidewalks across Idaho came alive with the sound of tennis shoes, bike tires, and scooter wheels. Families, teachers, and local leaders joined together to celebrate active transportation while raising awareness about pedestrian and bike safety.
Walk and Roll to School Day, held each October, and Bike and Roll to School Day in May are part of a nationwide movement to encourage children and families to choose active, safe, and environmentally friendly ways of getting to school.
Local volunteers and safety advocates set up along walking and biking routes, greeting students with high-fives, reflective gear, and healthy snacks. Some led bike buses and others supervised groups of students as they walked to their schools. Police officers and crossing guards provided extra support at busy intersections, while community leaders used the opportunity to talk about infrastructure improvements like crosswalk upgrades, bike lanes, and traffic-calming measures.
According to Idaho Smart Growth, Walk to School Day is more than just a fun morning activity — it’s a way to introduce families to the benefits of walking and biking, from improved physical health to reduced traffic congestion. It also helps highlight areas where safety can be improved, ensuring that every child has a secure route to school.
